Data Assessments are typically offered when a client wants to investigate the use of NASA ESE remotely
sensed data within their operational DSS, perhaps before placing an order for data products or data analysis
services. Categories of assessment provided here include: evaluation, verification and validation, and
benchmarking. Data Assessments will aim to provide additional services to users in the initial stages of
incorporating RS data into their existing DSS. GDA will first evaluate the needs and requirements of the
client DSS and then verify and validate the extent to which specific NASA ESE datasets can meet them.
This process includes a rigorous analysis of the extent to which a specific NASA dataset can supplement
or replace current datasets used by the client.
- Evaluation: GDA will undertake a careful examination of the DSS in order to fully understand the
current operation, the needs of the client with respect to better data, and the requirements that such data would have to fulfill
- Verification: GDA will verify the extent to which various types of NASA sensor data can fulfill
these identified needs, and will develop an understanding of the customized value-added product that best meets user needs
- Validation: GDA will validate the value-added products, in conjunction with the client, to ensure
that the products are a suitable replacement to, or an improvement over, currently used data. Various
methods will be utilized including comparisons/correlations with existing in-situ data as well as measures
of goodness-of-fit, model bias, efficiency, etc. after the introduction of the NASA-derived data into the DSS
- Benchmarking: GDA will also work with the client to benchmark the results of the final enhanced client
DSS in order to evaluate how the DSS which assimilates NASA data compares in its operation, function, and
performance to the earlier version without the NASA inputs.
